Blue Security community and media liaison officer Andreas Mathios said the taxi driver was waiting to receive payment from a passenger who he was dropping off on the corner of Mariannridge Drive and Bushbuck Ridge in Pinetown when the suspect accosted him.

The incident occurred at around 22.43pm.

“The suspect approached the taxi driver and threatened him by lifting up his shirt to show him that he had a ‘firearm’. Several words were exchanged between the taxi driver and the suspect before the taxi driver fired two shots in the direction of the suspect, injuring the suspect in the abdomen.

“Upon investigation at the scene it was later found that the suspect had been carrying a toy gun under his shirt. It is unclear at this stage whether he intended hijacking or robbing the taxi driver,” Mathios said.
