Newborn baby found and rescued from storm water drain

A newborn baby was found and rescued from a storm water drain by a team of rescuers that managed to extract the baby girl safely out of the drain in which she was trapped in Newlands East this morning.

“A passerby reported hearing something that he said sounded like the noise of a cat coming from a storm water drain on the corner of Baracuda road and Herring Circle at around 6am. He notified a nearby resident who immediately alerted the authorities and a rescue team was mobilised to the scene,” Mathios said.

Blue Security community and media liaison officer Andreas Mathios stated the below members responded swiftly to the scene after the baby was spotted in the drain at around 6am:

• Fire Department
• Life Response 24
• Rescue Care
• The provincial Emergency Medical Rescue Services
• Durban University of Technology Life Support team paramedics
• Metro Police Search and Rescue
• SAPS Newlands East
• Flying squad members

“Rescue workers battled for several hours to lift the baby safely out of the storm water drain before Air Mercy Services flew her by helicopter to hospital for medical treatment. It is unclear at this stage how the baby ended up in the drain,” Mathios said.

Mathios said the community had nicknamed the baby girl “Storm” after her harrowing ordeal in the drain.
