Time: 07 January 2025
Incident:
Domestic Disturbance turned Public Hazard

The Blue Security team, alongside various community partners, recently responded to a challenging situation in Crestholme that showcased the importance of collaboration, preparation, and care during emergencies.

During heavy rainfall, a Corsa bakkie lost control and drove into the river in Crestholme. While attending to this incident, a contractor truck, trying to avoid oncoming traffic, slid on the wet road as it suddenly braked. Although the truck narrowly avoided a head-on collision, it clipped a Ford Figo with passengers seated in the rear. Thankfully, there were no serious injuries, but the recovery of the Corsa and the contractor’s truck was still required.

The quick response from Crestwatch Neighbourhood Watch (NHW), S.T.A.R.T, Redline Ambulance, and Metro Services ensured the situation was managed effectively, with all individuals involved receiving immediate attention. This was a true testament to the power of teamwork and the commitment of our local heroes.

While the incident ended without major injuries, it served as a stark reminder of the dangers posed by wet weather conditions and the importance of staying vigilant on the roads.

Tips for Driving Safely in Rainy Conditions

Wet weather can dramatically increase risks on the road. The Blue Security team has compiled some tips to help keep you and your loved ones safe when driving in the rain:

1. Slow Down and Increase Following Distance
Rain reduces road grip and lengthens stopping distances. Lower your speed and maintain a gap of at least three to four seconds between your vehicle and the one in front of you.

2. Use Your Lights Wisely
Always turn on your headlights during rain to improve visibility for yourself and other drivers. Avoid using high beams as they can reflect off the rain and impair your vision.

3. Keep Tyres in Check
Ensure your tyres have enough tread and are properly inflated. Worn-out tyres significantly increase the risk of skidding or hydroplaning on wet roads.

4. Avoid Sudden Braking
Braking too hard or too quickly can cause skidding. Instead, brake gently and progressively to maintain control of your vehicle.

5. Steer Clear of Puddles
Standing water may conceal potholes or debris and can also cause hydroplaning. If you must drive through a puddle, go slowly and steadily.

6. Check Your Wipers and Lights
Before you set off, ensure your windshield wipers and all vehicle lights are in good working condition. Clear visibility and being seen by other drivers are essential for safety.

7. Stay Focused
Wet conditions demand your full attention. Avoid distractions like adjusting the radio or checking your phone while driving.

8. Plan Ahead
Allow extra travel time during rain and consider postponing non-essential trips if the weather is severe. If possible, choose safer, well-lit routes.

9. Handle Skids With Care
If your vehicle starts to skid, do not panic. Steer gently in the direction you want to go and avoid sudden movements.

10. Know When to Stop
If visibility becomes too poor or the rain is too heavy, find a safe spot to pull over and wait for conditions to improve. Safety always comes first.
