Artificial Intelligence (AI) is the intelligence demonstrated by machines in their ability to perform tasks that typically require human intelligence, such as visual perception, speech perception, decision making and translation between languages. Its discovery has been referred to as the electricity of this century with data being likened to the oil that drives the generator.
Although it seems straight out of Minority Report, the reality is that AI is revolutionising the security industry with developments such as face recognition technology. AI has already infiltrated our everyday lives, having a positive effect on our safety with companies such as Microsoft and Apple employing facial recognition as a method of unlocking one’s laptop, phone or tablet and Facebook using AI to detect posts or live videos where someone may be expressing suicidal thoughts.

Facial recognition technology creates situational awareness by enabling the monitoring and tracking of areas of interest and sending alerts when people or objects enter them, triggering an emergency response if needed. Taking a more proactive approach to security, however, requires quality intelligence and the data provided by video footage is golden.
Beyond facial recognition, AI’s ability to transform video footage into actionable insight has made significant advancements in the fight against crime. Obtaining intelligence from video previously required watching hours of footage. AI has provided us with the ability to train computers to detect and extract data from a video, distinguishing between objects, analysing behaviour and classifying the data for different applications.
In one example, a police department in Hartford, Connecticut was experiencing high crime rates and had an enormous drug problem. Installing a system with the ability to zero-in on various behaviours and draw pathways of human traffic, assisted them in locating a crack house which was visited by 656 people in a 12-hour period.
No longer a fictional concept but still in the early stages of implementation, there is still lots to learn about AI tech and its capabilities in transforming the security industry as we know it.
