UPDATE: We’re heartbroken to announce that the reaction officer Pumzile Fitshane succumbed to his injuries late last night.
Armed robbers shot a Blue Security armed response officer who disturbed a gang of eight suspects during a home invasion on the Bluff this morning.
Blue Security operations director Brian Jackson said the armed response officer was responding to the scene of a home invasion in Maxwell Avenue when two suspects, armed with automatic rifles, shot at him.
Jackson said a gang of eight armed robbers had arrived at the property in two separate vehicles at around 9.25am. “The officer responded to the scene in less than two minutes and had parked on the side of the road. Two suspects armed with automatic rifles, who were stationed as ‘look-outs’ in one of the vehicles parked in the driveway, jumped out and walked towards his vehicle,” he said.
“The officer then jumped out of his vehicle and ran to the back to take cover, when the suspects opened fire and shot him in the pelvis. ER24 paramedics stabilised the injured officer at the scene before transporting him to hospital.” Jackson said. “A domestic worker who was in the house alone at the time of the robbery was also taken to hospital for treatment, as she was injured when she jumped over a wall to a neighbouring property to escape the gang.”
Jackson said an airgun, modem and cellphone were reported stolen.
Brighton Beach SAPS attended the scene and are investigating.
Another armed response officer was shot in Umbilo when he responded to an alarm activation last month.
