The question is: Are you contributing to the high murder and violent crime rate in South Africa by not adequately securing your personal fierarms?

According to an Institute of Security Studies report, SA has the 3rd highest annual rate of reported firearms deaths after Columbia and Venezuela and, of the approximately 20 000 murder victims in South Africa in 2007, close to half died as a result of firearms.  Most of these murders were committed with illegal firearms, which researchers claim to have been stolen from and / or lost by licensed civilian owners, state armouries and state personnel.

A quality gun safe is absolutely non-negotiable and it’s also critical that a gun safe is bolted and epoxied to the floor (a concrete floor) from the inside of the safe to prevent criminals from removing the safe and working on opening it at their leisure. We all have a role to play in reducing crime and being a responsible and sane gun owner plays an important part in keeping firearms out of the hands of the criminal element.

ADVICE YOU CAN USE: At best DIY burglar guards screwed into window frames offer at most a false sense of security and are no match for a determined burglar who will with a forceful push easily remove this flimsy obstacle. A far better option is to replace the screw with an 8mm bolt right through the window frame.  For cosmetic (and increased security) purposes the head of the bolt should be counter sunk into the window frame and the nut should be rounded off with a file or angle grinder and coated in epoxy. It might take a lot longer to install burglar guards this way but by the same token it takes a lot more than a firm shove to break through them.
