BLUE ALERT FOR ALL AREAS FOR THE WEEK PRECEDING 25 August 2011

Pinetown, Crompton Street. Armed Robbery – Business  (23 August 2011, 7:00:26)
Four suspects armed with a screwdriver and a firearm held up the client as he was opening up the shop. A cell phone and cash were stolen and the suspects fled in the client's Nissan bakkie, registration number NU136364.

Opening and closing times leave staff and businesses vulnerable to crime. We advise that at least two people are present at opening and closing times and to be very vigilant of their surroundings.  Business owners and staff members can wear portable alarms around their necks which when pressed will activate the alarm siren. The siren tends to get the criminal element moving along and away from your premises and our control room will be alerted to the fact that you are in need of assistance.

In order for a crime to be committed three things are necessary: Means, Motive and Opportunity. Of these, Opportunity is the only element that can be controlled. By installing an effective Intruder alarm system together with an armed reaction service, installing CCTV cameras and 24-hour guarding if necessary the Opportunity of criminals will be seriously reduced and the risk of detection and apprehension significantly increased.

Man's best friend is probably the best deterrent to ward off criminals in this type of situation. Our doggy friends love to run up to the car and greet us as we arrive home, and will bark furiously if anyone tries to get close to their beloved owner, which alerts you that trouble is close by and will allow you to press the panic alarm, thus triggering the alarm siren and sending the would-be attackers fleeing . And, of course, we will be along shortly to make sure that you are OK.

Glenwood, Devonshire Avenue. Gatecrashing – Business (23 August 2011, 4:58:23)
The driveway gate was forced open and the security gate and front door forced open. Two doors to a storage room were forced open and the suspects shattered a sliding door.  A tape deck, amplifier and a computer were stolen.

A detection device installed on the driveway gate will alert you the moment somebody attempts to force the gate open.  This device can be as simple as an industrial magnetic contact or more sophisticated strip beams. It’s also important to ensure that your alarm system is in good working order, so that it doesn’t fail in an emergency. Alarm batteries need to be checked regularly to ensure they’re in good working order – we’d advise at least every six months – as the health of a battery is affected by our climate of extreme heat and humidity and, of course, wear and tear.  Faulty batteries are one of the biggest cause of alarm failure and false alarms. If you need assistance checking your alarm battery please give us a call on 031 711 5000 and one of our technicians will assist you.  Please note that small fee is charged for this service.
