BLUE ALERT FOR THE WEEK PRECEEDING 18 MAY 2010 Crime affects us all. We know that…but it seems that we sometimes take the ‘it won’t happen to me’ stance. High fences and ‘secure’ estates aren’t the safe havens that some people make them out to be. Don’t fool yourself - A criminal WILL get into a property if he really wants to. High walls, security beams, vicious attack dogs, alarm systems – they are all by-passable to a degree, if the criminal is smart enough. Now, of course, we don’t want to scare you into thinking that nothing will ever protect you 100%, but we’ve got to be realistic. If the criminals use their heads to get in…we can use ours to keep them out. Let’s take a look at what’s been going on this week. Hillcrest, Shortlands Avenue. Armed Robbery - Residential (13 May 2010, 10:33) Driveway gate was derailed. Gardener, who was cleaning the courtyard, was forced inside the house. Two suspects, armed with handguns, ordered the maid and her daughter into the bedroom where they were then told to lie down on the floor. A flat screen TV, Playstation console and a plasma TV was stolen. This is one of the most commonly used “cons” in the book. Please people! Ensure your staff never let anyone onto the property without your prior arrangement. Make it a rule! Gillits, Emoyeni Drive. Armed Robbery - Residential (14 May 2010, 03:14) Electric fence was cut and entry gained into complex. Three suspects knocked on resident’s door. When resident opened the door, they held him up at gunpoint and demanded his belongings. A flat screen TV and wallet were stolen. Suspects fled in resident’s Mercedes Benz. Now, the lesson here is that you are never really 100% safe from crime – no matter where you live. People move into housing estates for the additional security and consequently let their guard down. The best advice we can give you is to practice the same safety measures that you would anywhere else. Don’t leave your windows and doors open or unlocked (yes, we know some of you don’t even lock your front doors at night!) and ensure that you don’t answer the door to any strange characters. Isipingo, Dahlia Place. Hijacking (12 May 2010, 16:57) A parent, who was fetching their child from school, was held up by 3 black males who produced a firearm. Shortly thereafter the suspects fled, it was then established that two cell phones that were left in the kitchen area and R200 in cash was stolen. We see all too often that suspects are able to enter a house through an open door or an open window, this is not a co-incidence, criminals walk the streets of our neighbourhoods looking for these opportunities – that’s why it is called an “opportunistic crime”. You can make a real difference by being security conscious and ensuring that you don’t inadvertently present opportunities to would be criminals.
